You Don't Have to Earn Your Rest

Rest isn't the reward at the end of a productive day. It's part of how you care for yourself along the way.
There is always one more thing that could be done.
One more email. One more load of laundry. One more errand. One more thing to cross off the list before we finally give ourselves permission to sit down.
Somewhere along the way, many of us learned to treat rest as something we earn. We rest after the work is finished, after everyone else is taken care of, after we've been productive enough to justify doing nothing.
The problem is that life rarely reaches a point where everything is finished. There will always be another task waiting. Maybe the better question isn't, Have I done enough to deserve a break? Maybe it's, What would taking care of myself look like today? Sometimes that means going to bed earlier instead of squeezing another hour out of the evening. Sometimes it's declining an invitation when what you really need is a quiet afternoon at home. It could be sitting outside with your coffee before the day begins or taking twenty minutes to read without feeling as though you should be doing something more useful.
Rest doesn't always have to mean sleep, either. It can mean giving your mind a break from decisions, your body a break from rushing or yourself a break from being available to everyone. And perhaps most importantly, you don't need to explain it.
Taking care of yourself isn't time stolen from the things that matter. You are one of the things that matter.
A Gold Coast Ritual
Sometime today, give yourself 20 minutes that don't need to accomplish anything.
No catching up. No multitasking. No making the time productive.
Just twenty minutes that belong to you.
Today's Affirmation
I do not have to earn the right to rest. Caring for myself is part of living well.
LIVE. THRIVE. REPEAT.
